I love volunteering. There are so many organizations in need these days due to the economy. I wish I had more time to spend.

Does anyone else volunteer for nonprofit organizations?

I volunteer for several nonprofit organizations, but they deal with things I love, so I doubt if they really count. They certainly don't seem like work.
I am the treasurer for a local art group, and run the website for their annual art fair among other things.
I am the phone answerer for an environmental/wildlife organization, and handle their email traffic too, which includes sending out the monthly newsletter to the 150 or so subscribers.
I sing at the drop of a hat for anyone who wants to hear me; my church, the local symphony choir, and 2-3 other gigs every year.
It's all TOO much fun to be considered admirably worthy works!

I spent a few years volunteering at the Red Cross and the United way. I have enjoyed both. My life just feels off if there is no giving of service in it for any length of time.

I often hear my friends and coworkers who are parents complaining that their college aged kids don't have a good attitude to succeed in life. I always recommend that a little volunteer work might help steer them in the right direction, especially if it is the kind that will expose them to people who are less well off than they are. Giving service to others builds character so it's good for people to get into the habit early in life.

My mother started us off visiting nursing homes and veteran hospitals at about age 11 so it's always seemed like a natural thing to do. Even now I will just walk into a nursing home and visit people that I don't know.

I'm considering hospice work. I have a friend who does it and finds it very rewarding and of course it's a much needed service. I've followed her on her rounds a couple of times and I can understand why she and the patients benefit so much from it.
I was ready to sign up and then watched her lose someone that she had been visiting for a year. I may just stick with visiting random people without it being hospice affiliated. I get so attached. There are hospice opportunities that dont require patient contact tho so I may just do office work there until I decide if I have the emotional strength to visit with the patients. Visiting is where my heart is tho.

I plan to do 20 hours a week once I retire. I can't really imagine not working anyway.
