Virginia is midway between California and Europe and is making wines that takes the best from each.

There are getting on for 200 wineries in Virginia and I was stunned by the high quality of the wines they make.

My first report from Virginia is here

How very interesting, I had certainly never heard of any American wines other than Californian so I would be fascinated to try them out - depending of course on whether they are available outside the US, and more precisely in the UK. Would you be able to give me the name of a particular one which you would recommend and I will ask about it at my local shop, or at somewhere more specialised next time I am up in London?

Hi Isabel

Virginia wines are not widely available in the UK but they are stocked by Whole Food Markets in London and the Oxford Wine Company lists three and there are some other independents listing some.

You -- or your local wine store -- can buy direct from the importer New Horizon Wines

I will be giving a tasting on Virginia wines in Welwyn, Hertfordshire, onb 24 Feb next year, and Chris Parker -- the importer of Virginia wines - will be presenting a tasting later in the year at my wine club in St Albans, Herts.

Perfect, one of my clients lives near the Whole Foods Market so next time I am up in London cooking for her, I will have a look and see what they are stocking. And I will put those two dates in my diary in the hopes of being able to attend.

You can buy online direct from the winery in most cases.

Hi Peter, I really appreciated coming across this post and your article. My husband and I have only recently begun drinking wine and have been wanting to learn more about it, so guess where I turned? Here! And guess what I discovered? I live in what is apparently wine country!

I am about a 15 minute drive from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Of course, I was aware of the local wineries, but as someone who didn't drink it, I haven't paid a whole lot attention to them. Now that we are enjoying a glass a few evenings a week, we've been talking about going to one of the wine tastings hosted at Jefferson's Vinyards. We know absolutely nothing about the difference between wines. The choices at the store are overwhelming. So far we've been trying wines from Tuscany, France and California and only just recently picked out a wine from Barboursville!

I'm glad you also posted the link to Virginia wineries - I'm looking forward to learning more about wine through your site and our local area.

Ahhh

I had a great time in Charlottesville - there's a first rate steakhouse there called the Angus Barn on the main street...

Barboursville winery is worth visiting. It is the oldest existing winery in Virginia and has a super restaurant if you want to splash ou. ALso has ruins of a mansion designed by T Jefferson for his friend James Barbour which uses the same octagon shape found at Monticello.

Any wine questions you have just ask them here!
