This was something Leah said way deep in another thread and I wanted to bring it up again. She said when life feels overwhelming, to bring things in:

Quote:
Take a few minutes every day to move that one pet project along. Slowly inch by inch. Maybe it's organizing a shelf, putting together your five year plan, working out for 20 minutes a day, making sure there are no dishes in your sink (ala flylady)etc.

Just choose something that will have long term benefits and be faithful to it every day for a few minutes. Claim it as your foundation. Shine it up, polish it love it.

I swear this has helped me. There have been times when I felt I was in the middle of a whirlwind, but was comforted by the fact that I had washed and folded all of the clothes.

I like the idea of taking one thing and being mindful with it, paying attention to it, and shining it up. Giving it love.

I want to think about this some more and then do it.

How would others incorporate this in their lives?

I get so overwhelmed with so many things to do that I don't know where to start and so I end up not doing anything.

I like the idea of taking baby steps and accepting that you don't have to finish everything perfectly all at once right now.

I'm going to try that. If there's any hope for me I think this might be it.

Thanks Jilly for reminding me of that post!! Yes, Reality TV Host, life coaching is all about baby steps, small incremental changes that lead to big changes. It's the law of accumulation in effect.

Also I always keep in mind the words of Mira Kirshenbaum who says that when are choosing that ONE thing make sure it's what's closest to your heart. If you can get what's closest to your heart your chance of being happy increases.

Just the other day I was looking at the stack of books I'm reading:

Will Stohrr Vs. the Supernatural
The Power
Dreamgates
The Dreamer's Book of the Dead
A Dresden File's book
Don Juan and the Art of Sexual Energy

And I don't seem to be getting very far in any of them.

I decided two nights ago to pick one and focus on it - and I chose the one I'd gotten the farthest in. Now I have them lined up - in the order that they will be read.

What a RELIEF!

For me, loving the "thing" is being grateful.

So I looked at all those books and thought about how lucky I am to have them in the first place. They are all fantastic, and I am excited to read each and every one!

What a blessing.

Deanna,

I think sometimes we get so ambitious and then wind up just spinning our wheels. But when we focus, do one thing at a time we actually get MORE done!

I totally agree Leah! I was getting a little too ambitious with some writing - and even trimmed that down so that I'm just focusing on one thing.

SOOOOO much easier to manage, for sure!

I agree that it's a huge help to find one thing to cross off that list of the day and to get it done. The sense of accomplishment makes you even more likely to cross off something the next day too! All those little steps definitely add up.

Okay, my one big important thing right now is getting ready for my Seattle trip. I have to pack, buy airborne, figure out the shuttle to the Phx airport, bring my dog and his stuff to a friend in flagstaff, find someone to look in on my cats for two weeks, pay all the bills for this month, and make sure the top work items are taken care of. And I leave monday! And tomorrow is RunPee day so I will be busy doing something else!

So yes I am feeling overwhelmed. My computer was down for a week and now that i have it back i am leaving in a few days! Ack!

Okay, i need to pick one thing and love it. I think i will love packing. I may as well start there.

Jilly -

Feel the thrill of your trip! This is an amazing trip, and you have a safe sanctuary of a home to return to when you're done! This is a perfection you could not have dreamt of a short while ago smile

The remaining little hurdles are tiny! You can do them!

I ended up having a great trip, with a ton of hiking, photography and pretty places to see. I want to go back now.

It was also very nice to not be alone all the time.

Right now, things are more challenging. If i had to pick one thing and love it, I'd say that i can love the work I am doing right now to arrange my RV the way I want it. I no longer share it with anyone, so I can really decide how i want things stowed, and how I want it to look. I think i will decide to make this fun. smile

Ha! Okay, I just poured several hours into fixing this desk thing that Dan left behind. It was a ton of work to disassemble it and use only the parts I wanted. It's a very intricate handmade desk. So i finally wrestled the panel off that was covering the window - and OOPS. A cedar tree has huge branches blocking my view.

So then i went out there with my jigsaw, hacksaw and loppers and spent an hour clearing large branches off the pine. Finally, I got my view.

So then I spent another hour taking apart my computer area (was using a vintage metal typewriter table and the couch) and setting everything up at the desk. Whew - now I have some light in here and my Sedona view at the large desk. I am thrilled. It was kinda cathartic, being both destructive and constructive.

Very symbolic, indeed, Jilly. Good for you! smile

Deanna, I also tend to attempt too many things because, well, I like so many things! But now I'm focusing on one thing and loving it into creation.

It's really working. The love really imbues me with sustained enthusiasm and my pet project just flourishes.

I have had a cold and today has been the worst day, I loved writing my weekly article today which was great so I can now be ill in peace without dreaming about writing articles! I am going to love my English Bull terrier - Summerjam now, he has been so patient today, it snowed heavily so the dogs could not go out much and he has sat by my feet, keeping them warm all day. Love Love Love my dog.

Peace and God Bless

Linda, I hear you. LOL. I've been so busy over the last decade that I fear getting sick. I think, in 5 years when the children are independent, then I can get sick...Then I can sleep in late and stay in bed all day...then I can...etc, etc, etc...

Okay, I think I need to deal with the rebate for the cabin i stayed at in Seattle. I need to find the receipt and send it off before it expires. So that will be the thing I love today: since I had such a lovely time at the cabin, i will love remembering my time there while I hunt for the paperwork.

Leah

I can relate to what you say and also know that when I have got to the stage of "when I have done this I can do that" if I am able to it is often the best time to make some kind of change, whether it be in mind, body or spirit...

If you could pick one new year's resolution for the coming year, what would it be?
