You've been asked to help with a particular project - Project A. Feeling honored, you graciously agree to help out and make a commitment in time and energy for a project that would take 6 months. The announcement has been made to the entire company and everyone is ready to get started.
You're approached by a popular person within the organization that asks you to help on her on project B.
Knowing that helping on project B would be running at the same time, but give you more visability within the organization and MAY lead to other great projects - what would you do?
Would you honor the first commitment you made to project A? Or would you say - the heck with it, they'll understand and go with project B
Depends on whether the person (Project B) could guarantee me having a job (lol). This is not the time to "test" how much you are needed. Project A for me.
I would help with Project A and hope that Project B will come along again at a later time. I would definitely let project b know that I was interested but had made a prior commitment that I needed to honor. That might garner some points.
