The Poles speak a Slavic language and have a special fondness for English. In fact, English is the most popular foreign language in Poland. The Polish population is largely urban centric with 60% of the population living in cities.

fishAnyone speak Slavic? Or been to Poland? Or know anyone from Poland? We would love to hear from you no matter unimportant you may think what you have to say is. It is the "little" things that make a site AWESOME. So come on, start posting..... fish

I have visited Poland a few times, and find many, or most speak English very well, and want to use the chance to speak English each chance they get. I find, the people of Poland very helpfull, like the people of the USA were several years ago. And the women of Poland are hot, and the men of Poland would rather drink that worry of the care of the great Polish women.

Basically, it is what Mike said. It translates as "It is not for us.....(something). Probably it says "it is not for us to know" or IOW "none of our business".

I believe the original question, or topic, was on Polish language.

Here is a poem to share with all. A poem by Wislawa Szymborska

CHMURY

Z opisywaniem chmur
musialabym sie bardzo spieszyc -
juz po ulamku chwili
przestaja byc te, zaczynaja byc inne.

Ich wlasciwoscia jest
nie powtarzac sie nigdy
w ksztaltach, odcieniach, pozach i ukladzie.

Nie obciazone pamiecia o niczym,
unosza sie bez trudu nad faktami.

Jacy tam z nich swiadkowie czegokolwiek -
natychmiast rozwiewaja sie na wszystkie strony.

W porownaniu z chmurami
zycie wydaje sie ugruntowane,
omalze trwale i prawie ze wieczne.

Przy chmurach
nawet kamien wyglada jak brat,
na ktorym mozna polegac,
a one, coz, dalekie i ploche kuzynki.

Niech sobie ludzie będą, jesli chca,
a potem po kolei kazde z nich umiera,
im, chmurom nic do tego
wszystkiego
bardzo dziwnego.

Nad calym Twoim zyciem
i moim, jeszcze nie calym,
paraduja w przepychu, jak paradowaly.

Nie maja obowiazku razem z nami ginac.
Nie musza byc widziane, zeby plynac.

English translation:

Clouds

Id have to be really quick
to describe clouds -
a split seconds enough
for them to start being something else.

Their trademark:
they dont repeat a single
shape, shade, pose, arrangement.

Unburdened by memory of any kind,
they float easily over the facts.

What on earth could they bear witness to?
They scatter whenever something happens.

Compared to clouds,
life rests on solid ground,
practically permanent, almost eternal.

Next to clouds
even a stone seems like a brother,
someone you can trust,
while theyre just distant, flighty cousins.

Let people exist if they want,
and then die, one after another:
clouds simply don't care
what they're up to
down there.

And so their haughty fleet
cruises smoothly over your whole life
and mine, still incomplete.

They aren't obliged to vanish when we're gone.
They don't have to be seen while sailing on.

Thanks for sharing = this is what this site is about. If someone wants to keep stuff PRIVATE, they need to do so via email, US letter,or even the phone. Secondly, this is a POLISH site, so expect that country's language to be posted. If you want only English, there are so many options on this site.

This is AWESOME Phyllis! Thanks again......

easter Hi rdywenur, thanks for the tip. I don't have twitter or a cell phone or a laptop right now - have to be borrowing my daughters, but when God blesses me with those items, I will definately take your advice. I have heard good things about twitter.

If you don't mind me asking, were you born in Poland? And if you don't want to answer, just pretend you did not see my post (lol).

Thanks!

Why do your friends have to speak German? is there work-related reason? Generally German is one of popular languages learnt and taught in Poland, but still English is the most common.

I was born in Germany actually but my parents are Polish (WWII displaced many Poles) I have been here since I was 3. The ship I came over here on was sunk just off the coast of Key West. If you deep sea dive then it is the place to visit (reefs) There is some great footage taken of the Vandenberg getting sunk, under water etc. Was on the news so maybe you caught it last year.

Barbara...my cousins when I visited Poland in 98 were learning English yet they seemed like they preferred to speak Polish (to me) My Polish is limited (like that of a childs) They speak a bit more in English now yet I still sence the hesitancy to learn it. I am guessing the people in Poland that are in bigger cities and for work purposes who have English as a second language fare far better in progressing in their job ranks.

Indeed:) I would even translate it as 'So why don't you respect her?'.

Anyway, sorry, do not want to sound like a teacher but the right spelling would be:

"To dlaczego nie szanujesz jej?"

PROSZE;)

Even Poles make grammar mistakes:)

Anyway, as this is English speaking forum let's teach everybody what we say!

DZIEKUJE - thank you
PROSZE - you welcome (might also mean: 'please' or 'here you are')

Just a small Polish lesson:)

But it is sooo nice that you feel the will to learn.
Did you only learn from relations, or did you also attend some school or course?

well there s an old saying here....use it or lose it. I met a Polish friend at age 10 who came to the states so kept up the language. Now polishing it up by Skyping with my cousin in Poland. My brothers and sister understand my mom to some extent but don't speak it.

Indeed:) I agree - if you do not practise the language, you forget it quite easily - or at least lose the ability to speak it fluently (most of the time, not always:)

So, practise whenever you can practise:)
