Hi all,

I've just posted a new article regarding a topic that's being discussed all over the internet by outraged parents and teachers. Have a look and let me know your views.

Special Education & Shouting in the Classroom

Have a great day,
Vicki

Vicki, great article!! I agree that there are a lot of things wrong in the educational system that make kids unhappy. Sometimes the things that we are instructed to do as teachers just sucks the joy out of teaching and learning. I was reminded of that this year when a student commented that he had looked forward to my class for years, and now he found out it was "boring." As an experienced teacher, I did not take offense, but explained that I know how hard it is. I could make it easier, and more interactive (a lot less boring), but that takes more time, and we would not have gotten through the material. We would all have had more joy in learning--until the "F" came on the grade cards. Our district has common assessment, and the kids have to pass them. Because I pushed on in my boring way, they all earned a grade of "A" this semester. On another front, I seldom yell at kids, but my master teacher thought that was the way to go. In some settings, it is the norm, and no amount of telling them it could be done differently is accepted. Also, sometimes taking a stand, gets you written up for insubordination. Then, what happens to your kids? They get a different teacher--one who is more willing to toe the line.

Hi cdmistler,

I'm so glad you took the time to post in the forum.

I'm not a teacher so I have no idea what it must be like to be responsible for so many children. But having spoken with a few I get the sense that teachers also aren't happy with the current standards within education. That it's not just the children who are failing to thrive but the teachers are also losing their capacity to be creative and explore and help children to learn in whichever way is best for them.

There are so many test results and standards that have to be achieved within the current education system that everyone is losing out. Is is any wonder that students and teachers alike are so unhappy?

For a student to have spent years wanting to have you as their teacher says a lot about you and that you are doing the very best you can to support your students. And to take the time to explain that you understand is a great thing.

It's insane that anyone could be written up for insubordination for doing the right thing (I used to work in the USA as a nurse so I know how that works). But I understand how difficult it must be to want to do the right thing but know that it could potentially make things worse for you and the children in your care.

We should be doing all we can to make education a great experience for everyone involved. How we do that I'm not sure but I believe that anything is possible and that it will happen. It has to.

I'm glad there are teachers like you out there.

Take care,
Vicki
