My favorite "Alaska Adventure" was driving the ALCAN *to* Alaska when I first moved here as a newlywed in October of 1997. I drove up from Michigan with my girlfriend (my husband was already up here <g>), two dogs, three cats and a van-load stuffed to the gills with "necessities".
What a wild ride that was! Crossing the border from Canada into Alaska was such a thrill - every mile closer to my destination of Anchorage was a mile closer to my new home. The mountains were so spectacular - the wildlife SO wild! An entire herd of caribou meandered past and around our van as we snapped picture after picture and tried to keep the dogs from barking.
The roads were bumpy, the weather changed every day - we were nearly snowed in at one point but managed to drive through it.
When we finally drove the last 100 miles, much of it downhill through the lovely, steep-sided Matanuska Pass following the glacial river by the same name ... I was so filled with awe and anticipation, I could hardly stand it.
My [new] husband was waiting for our arrival in Anchorage - we were ready to start a new life together (at age 45 <L>) ... now *that* is a memorable Alaskan Experience!
