Here's a thought: in the future do you think the historians will look upon these times as the dark ages??

They just might. If we do not stand together to save our country, the lights may go out in the America we know.

I think the fall of the Roman Empire and the invasion of smaller countries at that time was one of the worst times in the dark ages. Or was that just preceding the dark ages?

This time period will not be considered "Dark Ages" by future historians. The spread of communication and knowledge is greater than any previous point in human history. Communication is global and almost instantaneous now. The "Dark Ages" was considered a loss of knowledge in western Europe from the end of the Roman Empire to the beginning of the Renaissance. Over the last 200 years, and especially within the last half century, the technology of communications has increased dramatically. Information and knowledge easily accessible today. Knowledge is now longer held in the hands of a select few people among the political and religious elite.

It might be considered the dark ages by some only in limited areas, but as Craig said it will be overall be considered as such. The Dark Ages was a time where learning was actually discouraged, superstitions reigned, and the power was in a few people who were the only ones with education.

I think one of the worst things was the fact that the education was completely controlled by the church which used it wrongfully. Too many people were put to death based on superstition and fear. It wasn't until the Renaissance that people began to take the chance to learn and not be afraid of those that were in authority. Learning exploded and the advancement of man went further than ever before.

We were told it should be called the Early Medieval Period not the Dark Ages. A couple of weeks ago I went to see an Anglo-Saxon ship burial in eastern England at a place called Sutton Hoo. A pagan king was buried in his ship around 630 AD. He was placed with all his treasure. When you see how beautiful his gold buckles and plates, pots and pans, helmet and sword were, you realise these were craftsmen and not savages. There were also goods imported from places like India showing they had trade links with lands far away.

True, "Dark Ages" is not a term used by current historians. Today's historians consider the term "The Dark Ages" inaccurate and misleading in many respects.
