At a regular college you have a bookstore.

How do you buy the required textbooks for your online degree?

Lisa, I'm not sure about your particular school but when I took an online course, there was a bookstore and we could order the books online for the course(s) we were taking once we were given the list of books that were required. In my case the bookstore was really well organized and could compare the list of books that I ordered with the booklist they had been given by the college for the course I said I was taking. I don't think they did anything if you didn't order one of the books (after all you might get one second hand or someplace else) but they could see if you were way off base for some reason or using an old book list. Today I would think that the books would be available online from almost every school - even for the bricks and mortar courses. If you are a little like me, you probably want to get your books ASAP so that you can begin to read them even before the course begins. smile

Lisa,
There are many textbook sites where you can buy textbooks, as well. I recently purchased all of my text at the colleges bookstore, however, I sold some to websites.
Here is the link to one in which you can buy textbooks as well: treeoflife
Also, if you do a search to "buy textbooks" you will be given a host of sites.

My son James is taking distance courses and he had to find all of his books on his own. We got them through Amazon. Sometimes that was rough though because they would post the book list only days before the course started, and then one vendor took 3 weeks to get the book delivered! When I hit a situation like that I cancel that order and choose someone else who will ship more quickly.

I love Amazon! I haven't bought any textbooks through them however. UMD has an online bookstore which was very easy to get books through. I wish him the best in his education.

I do love Amazon too, they are awesome! But if you buy through a third party person on the site - which you often have to do for textbooks - it can take a while for the books to get to you. The schools often don't tell you far ahead what you need to get.
