We had a GREAT turn-out today at Kings Bay. I ran into some former tax clients who now work at the base. It was so good to see them. Lunch was awesome and included smoked salmon, Pueblo pork roast, pumpkin soup, Cherokee potatoes, roasted corn on the cob and corn bread. The weather was perfect, clear and sunny, but not too hot.
We had a drum, and a flute player, but no lodge set up. The tornado back in January shredded it. There were commanders in attendance, civilian employees, sailors and marines. We had several dances, some demonstration and a few inter-tribals. They called for a Ladies Choice Two Step and I grabbed my husband's Division Officer. My husband got quite a few "blackmail" pictures during that one.
I had some of the pictures from the 30th Anniversary Pow-wow in October and EVERYONE wants copies. I gave the CD to a tribal member who is compiling a photo history of the Tribal Grounds. The photos I had with me will be mailed to a tribal member serving in Afghanistan.
One of the best things - we'll be having Thanksgiving at the Tribal Grounds this year. The Chief told my husband to bring the camper and stay the weekend. YEAH!!!!!
Between now and then, I have to go through all my Pow-Wow pictures (12 years worth) to share with the historian. I'll try my best to get some posted here too.

Talked with my friend yesterday who is a Creek Elder. He called to invite us to the next Stomp down in Lake City, FL. The Stomp is hosted by the Rose Creek Band of Muskogee Creek Descendants.
We have participated in Stomp dances at St. George. There are many Creek and this dance follows the Arena dancing on Friday nights during Pow-Wow. It's different in many ways. With a fire in the center of the square, and no drum. The women wear rattles made of turtle shells around their ankles. It's an awesome sound. The dancers are segregated in the 4 shelters which make up the square, Elders, Men, Women and Children.
As with Arena dancing, there are many different dances. We have only experienced a few where anyone can join in. The songs we have heard are more like chants, with a leader and responses sung by the dancers.
We're excited about attending and thankfully our friend let me know of the attire requirements. For me, it's simply a skirt, and I'll have my mocs. My husband's ribbon shirt will work, but he needs a sash. Internet to my rescue! I have instructions and yarn to match. It's not wool yarn, but with only 2 weeks to learn AND complete a 6ft+ sash, I'll be using what I have.

Just returned from the Memorial Stomp in FL. Stopped by the Cherokee of GA Tribal Grounds in St. George, on the way home and the slab foundation for the new Tribal Office is poured and curing. We'll be helping with construction in the coming weekends. They are trying to have it completed before the spring Pow-wow in April.
The Memorial Stomp was very nice, but VERY COLD. We finally left for the motel around 1am and it was about 25 degrees. I know that's seasonal for others, but down here, our blood is thinned by summer time triples (100 degrees with 100% humidty).
As soon as we arrived, my husband was spirited off with our friend. After an hour or so I stepped out the cook shack and heard hammering. He was helping with roof repairs to one of the arbors. Needless to say, he fit right in. I wasn't able to complete his sash, but one was available to borrow.
We had an excellent potluck supper around 6pm and then headed down to the square for the Stomp. Everyone was so hospitable. We were not the only first timers in attendance and told we are now part of the family. While this was a Memorial Gathering and was certainly hard for Wind Clan Mother's husband, it was truly a celebration of her life, with funny and heartwarming stories shared between dances.
Entering the square, each of us was smudged with sage and escorted to our arbor. An Elder lit the fire and then prayers and tobacco were offered. I did not have the honor of meeting Wind Clan Mother, but it was obvious how well loved and respected she is.
We did a Friendship dance and I was invited to join in a Turtle dance (women only) which marks the 4 directions and the scales on a turtle shell. There was also flute and drum music. Standing in a circle around the fire, as the bright moon rose in the East was magical. You could feel the love inside the Square.
It felt like forever before I was warm and didn't sleep well at the motel. My apologies if this is a bit rambling, but I am so glad we went.

Excellent time, it appears.
Mine was not quite as 'spiritual' having classes/instruction on Saturday. Friday was a very informal dance - pow wow style, but not all the formality. Just an ice breaker for the kids (Scouts).
Saturday was the formal PowWow & I broke out the ribbon shirt. Not only did I place the military decorations, I added my aviator wings. What a sight it must've been because there were a lot of pictures taken after asking if it was okay. Had a Navy SEAL grab his ribbons & trident arttachment to place on his shirt. He knew I was planning to return (but 3 years later...) with beaded ribbons & he didn't want to feel out of place until there was a bunch of us with stuff stuck on our chests. Will add it to the pictures I owe, but I have to get a copy first; didn't have a personal camera. It went with wife as she visited folks in Las Vegas. (Yes, I gave up a trip to LV for a seminar/powwow in below freezing Statesville, NC)
Youth (boys & girls) spent the day learning the various dance styles & they could use them in the arena that night. Other classes on beadwork, FINGERWEAVING, moc construction, regalia making,... great time! Now multiply it by a week for what I'm looking forward to in August in Asheville, NC.
