I am writing an article about alternative containers for wines. If you have not yet poured a wine from a plastic bottle, carboard box or can the chances are good that you will in the next year or so as these things are gathering popularity...

But have you already encountered alternatives, and ifso, what did you think of them?

It starts:

Next time you see one of those six-packs of Sutter Home single-serve bottles pick it up and see if you notice anything different. The feel of it should immediately alert you. It will be considerably lighter. Sutter Home announced in July 2009 that it would be putting all its 187ml size servings into plastic bottles.

There is a big push by the wine business to lighten the load. Bottling wine in plastic, putting it in cardboard packs, canning it or using lightweight glass bottles are all methods being embraced to lessen the impact on the environment.

I can't help thinking that the wine would taste differently coming out of, say, an aluminum can. Hm. Maybe that's just an incorrect assumption?

Good point, SWK. I think the cans have an inert lining. If you poured it into a glass I don't think you'd be able to tell from a wine in a glass bottle, but if you drank it from the can ..... smile
