When I travel often I don't like to bring my physical real journal. So I'll make notes on my computer and when I get home I'll print them out and stick them into the appropriate place in the journal. I suppose I could hand transcribe them INTO the journal but that seems like too much work for me

Hey Lisa Why don't you like to travel with your journal? I LOVE taking mine when I travel. I guess, of course, the only issue would be loosing it. That would suck.

I don't want to lose it. My journal stays on my bed, where it's safe

I keep my journal on my computer, which makes it easier to add pages or paragraphs. Sometimes, if I want to add to an earlier entry, I'll italicize or mark it with an asterisk* to indicate that it's a later musing and not just editing.
Sometimes at work, if it's quiet, I'll pull up a simple text page, like in WordPad, if I have a thought I want to save, to perhaps expand on later. I'll try to get a little down, and then I'll save it on my desktop with an innocuous title, and later transfer it to my journal.
Which is one reason that I am glad to have my own laptop to use for work, even if carrying it back and forth is an ache-producing effort!

When I travel I do write a "public travelogue" most of the time, of the things I've seen and done. But I guess I'm a bit paranoid and don't usually keep private notes on the computer permanently

That's why I keep all my journaling stuff that matters on a flash drive that stays with me. The notes on my desktop that I intend to transfer in later are more or less "Don't forget"- type notes. No one gets into my own laptop but if they did it wouldn't mean anything to them; there isn't anything there that would embarrass me.

And oh, yeah, I have learned the hard way... always do a backup!!! And frequently too! That is the one way where a computer journal, or digital journal, or whatever you want to call it, is a whole lot better than a conventional pen-and-paper journal... you can back it up easily!

That is very true - if there's a fire, you don't lose all that valuable information forever. On the other hand, if your hard drive crashes, you could lose everything instantly So backups definitely are key!

One of my big-time ambitions- perhaps I should say two of them- is to scan and save my old journals so I'll have backups of them, as well as printing copies of my electronic journals. It's one of those plans that I keep putting off because it sounds like a pain in the tuchas!
