We just completed a South American cruise on the Star Princess. The cruise included embarking at Rio, on to Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Port Stanley, Ushuaia, Punta Arenas, Valparaiso, and then a land trip to Santiago, Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu. What a wonderful way to get away from the snow and ice and enjoy summer weather.

Angie,

That sounds wonderful! Is there a particular country that you love the most?

I liked Peru but that was part of the land tour rather than the cruise.

Unfortunately, it rained while we were in Buenos Aires. The little we saw was very interesting and the country itself is interesting more so because I know that my grandfather's brothers and nephew settled there early in 1900. I would like to return there. Chile was very nice. It is a long, narrow country and very diverse.

Thanks Angie. I have never visited South America before, but like you described....I have heard good things about Peru and Chile. It must have been exciting to see the place where part of your family root started.

Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad I visited Machu Picchu when I did - they recently had heavy rains which caused mudslides. The article I read said there were 2,000 tourists stranded there and had to be evacuated. The train which runs alongside the river was blocked with boulders and debris from the storm and that prevented people leaving. I hope there was no damage done to the historical areas.

The places we visited in Chile were very nice. Valparaiso and Santiago are very modern.
