Ann Marie,
I definitely understand it being difficult to get feedback. I've done a couple of things.
First, I've asked 2-3 or more people to type up their comments, place them in an envelope marked STAMPED confidential and place it in my mailbox - no handwriting anywhere. I've even gone as far as to actually write out a couple of questions. Many times people are more honest when they are anonymous...but then again they can be too bold and provide unconstructive criticism sometimes.
Then I tried to make sure that I didn't ask my friends, but I explained to other co-workers who I knew would give me honest feedback because they had nothing to gain from being nice or would not be worried about hurting my feelings (sounds horrible doesn't it?). It also depends on the size of the office.
If you only have your friends...try explaining to them what you are trying to accomplish and see if that works. I understand their point of view, in not losing your friendship.
I know what you mean though, I've had supervisor that only wrote good comments about me (listen to me complain...lol..) but I always have to ask what they saw as my developmental opportunities.
Thanks so much for your response!
