Do people really clean beneath their fridge? I'm sure it's grimy under there, but what do I do? Put a web microfiber on a stick?

I literally move my fridge from the corner that it's in and deep clean under it with bleach cleaner and water.

I pull out my refrig. every 6 months to vacuum off the fan and dust off everything. Mop the floor and wheel it back. This refrig is only 2 yrs. old. My other refrig. they said I prolonged it's life by doing this. I had it for 31 years before I decide to get a new one. It was still running good but just wanted a side by side. I also have a brush that I bought from home depot for dusting in between times underneath without having to roll it out. Great tool.

Use the brush from a car winshield cleaner/scraper to reach under your fridge.

I pull out my fridge every few months and scrub the floor underneath it. I also have a special coil brush designed to clean the coils on the back to increase energy efficiency. Our local energy co-op gives out the brushes when you get a home energy audit (part of trying to green our lives, and reduce our bills). I try to run the brush up underneath the fridge to get more stuff.
When I was in college a couple living in the married housing had their refrigerator catch on fire because it had been so long since it had been cleaned out underneath (like probably years) so that is something that freaks me out a little.
And I always find a lot of cat toys whenever I clean out under the fridge.

I guess I think of fridges as being hugely heavy. Do they really roll? Or slide? Doesn't everything inside it fall over?

You can tell that I've never even attempted to do that, and I've been living "on my own" since I was 18 smile My poor fridges! I used to move every year, so maybe they were always clean fridges, but we've been at this house for 15 years so that's 15 years of dust.

Although we got a new fridge maybe 8 years ago so there's only 8 years of dust under there smile

LOl...Lisa, This reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend that never cleaned beneath their fridge either - they didn't know that they could be moved. Thanks for the smile this morning. smile

Most of them roll and slide. The floor should be fine, but just be careful when you push it. It also shouldn't tilt over.

It's not just dust that gets under there. It's also food (that stray grape). It also gets greasy and sticky. If you've ever spilled a liquid close to your fridge, that's under there too. The dust bunnies are usually stuck to it all.

Our fridge is not that old but we usually just move to clean under them. I probably need to do that soon. Luckily the fridge is on the small side so it is easy to move.

I love cleaning under fridges. In all my moves that is one of the first things i do.

For one thing, there is so much gross gunk under them that cleaning them is very satisfying. it's also kinda fun to see the weird things you can pull out from previous renters, for example.

I bet you will find strange things under yours, if it's been 8 years! smile

And for another thing, it makes your unit run so much better and more efficiently (read - green) to clean out the grime bunnies from beneath and the coils.

Unless yours is built in, the unit should slide out easily.

Rosie, is your cat black or grey? hard to tell in the photo. She is very beautiful, though. Such eyes!

Cleaning under the refrigerator should DEFINITELY be something that is major cleaned yearly/biyearly - depending on your cleaning schedule/needs. One of the things we are going to start discussing is Seasonal Cleaning!! This topic will definitely be on there!! smile
