There is a higher student drop-out rate in distance learning than in on campus classes. My new article has some suggestions for keeping students actively engaged with the content of the course. You can read it here:

Add Student Interaction to Course Content

Have you tried any of these ideas? If so, did they help? Feel free to add your comments here on the forum.

Do you have any other suggestions that you have found helpful? Sharing them here could help beginning instructors or add variety to those used by more experienced educators.

I have found that when I make a personal connection with my adult learners, they are more apt to strive for a higher goal. For example, I tell my PreAlgebra students the story of how I failed that class in 1992 and I went on to nearly completing an EdD. I have had several students tell me whenever they have felt like giving up, they reflect upon that one statement and then they figure if I can do it, they can, too.

Thank you for making a great point, Alice. It is true that when people are feeling discouraged, they often feel motivated by the fact that others have faced the same problem and been able to overcome it. It is a good suggestion for teachers to keep in mind when they are sharing some personal information to connect with their students.
