I have a female budgie that just had 2 babies on July 3/09 and already she had laid another 8 eggs. 2 of the eggs are real dark in color but the rest seem normal. I am concern that it is much to early for her to have more babies. Also one of the new born budgies think they are the mommie and want to sit on the eggs, they will actually get rather loud and try to push mommie out of the way. What can I do to stop her laying these eggs. It is too late to remove daddy at this point because the damage is already done.

Hi Mabel - I don't usually check the birding forum (which is for wild bird), so I'm glad I passed by here this morning. Please make additional comments or question in the bird forum, which is in the home and garden category.

The first babies should be pretty much on their own now and can be safely removed from the parent birds. It is quite normal for a 2nd clutch to be laid at this time and if conditions are still good for raising babies when this clutch is almost weaned, you will probably find more eggs in the nest. It is not healthy for the hen to lay a 3rd clutch though and you should think about removing the nestbox as soon as this clutch of youngsters start to leave and before they are ready to go on their own.

If the 1st babies are not eating well on their own yet, you can move their father into the new cage with them for a few days, while the female is left to incubate the eggs.

Are you sure that the 2 dark eggs were not from the first clutch and did not hatch?

They may have been from the 1st I didn't see any eggs after the other two were born but could be mistaken. I am slow at getting back here. None of the other eggs were hatched and after 5 weeks I just removed them from the next because you could see right through them with a light, thank goodness I really don't want any more babies right now. My 10 budgies are all fine and love to play and sure do make a lot of noise at times, at least I know they are around. Thanks for betting back to me.
