I have no idea. Does your neighbor have some sort of fly bait in the plant that would attract them and then kill them. I hope someone has this answer, because that is the kind of plant to have in the yard.

No fly bait, just the bush, at first i thought it was a young rose bush it sorta looks like one, this thing does not produce any flowers.
Thanks for answering Gail

Rosie, I'm not sure I understand. Is this bush a good thing or a bad thing? Does this bush attract flies, causing too many around your house? Or does it attract flies and then kill them?

A couple years ago I had a lot of flies gather near my front door. Investigating, I found a dead bird in my peonies. When I removed the bird, the flies left. Could this be a cause???

Granny, The only bad thing about the bush are the flies, You can't sit out side without swatting them away. they seem to attach them self to the bush (shrub) what ever it is and they die on it. There aren't any dead birds or other critters around.
I wish i had a picture of it. I told my neighbor to just dig it up and plant something else there
But the neighbor across the way gave it to her.
"I wonder why"
And she doesn't want for her to see her getting rid of it?
So she puts up with the flies.
I hate it because if i leave my back door open to bring in groceries the flies will get in my house. I don't want flies in my house frown

I can't help. I have never heard of anything like this. But I certainly feel for you.

I would say plant something closer to your door that repels flies, but I don't know what that is either.

Good Luck. Fall is coming. GrannyH

Rosie, I recently received one of those FWD e-mails that may be your answer. It said to keep flies off your porch, or out of your house, hang a Zip-Lock baggie that is half-full of water and contains 4 - 6 pennies where the flies would fly. There is something about the reflection or some other theory that bothers flies and keeps them away. I haven't tried this, but it may work for you. Just hang on your porch posts, doorway, etc. and see if it works.

And let us know if it is effective. whistle GrannyH

Did she do that because you asked or were the flies bothering her as well?
