What does one journal when using writing as a healing tool? As a nonfiction writer, I tend to focus in on craft and not healing. If I were to shift my writing to a "healing" method, what would a typical journal entry include? "Almost cried today about ???" Or something like that?

writingwithink,
I am a very strong advocate of journaling. It is the tool that I was able to use to get through the processing of all the abuse I endured, both as a child and as an adult.

Journaling is very different than the writing style that you currently use. A journal would include your feelings, thoughts, emotions, and memories. You also want to do your journal on a daily basis.

When I journaled, I wrote down any flashbacks or memories that I had each day. I also wrote down what emotions and feelings came with those memories. If I was angry, I allowed myself to express the anger through words. If I felt confused, I allowed myself to jot that down as well.

Another tool that I used while journaling was drawing. Sometimes, after writing something down, I would draw a picture of how I was feeling at that precise moment. For instance, one day I felt like I was drowning in the emotions. They were so strong. So, I drew a picture of myself in a boat in a troubled sea. This will vary for everyone.

It's important to allow yourself to write down whatever comes to mind. You need not be concerned with grammar or punctuation. Nor should you worry about cussing in your journal. It's important to write exactly what you are feeling and thinking.

I commend you on your desire to process through journaling. It is indeed a powerful tool to use when seeking healing.
