One of my friends is currently driving from WA state to Alaska via the ALCAN Hwy. They plan on taking their first Alaskan side-trip before even crossing the Alaskan/Yukon main border by driving from Whitehorse (in the Yukon Territory of Canada) to Haines, AK and taking the ferry over to Skagway, AK. They want to ride the steep, narrow-gauge White Pass & Yukon railway [nearly] straight up the mountains surrounding Skagway. It was built during the Klondike Gold Rush and rises 3000 feet in just 20 miles - lots of cliff-hanger sharp turns and spectacular views! I can hardly wait to see the photos! Now THAT is what I consider a real "Family Adventure Vacation".
