Hi,
A reduction in work force was announced yesterday. After 6 months of budget meetings, fortunately we were able to keep all of our library's open. Unfortunately there were cuts in service hours for the smaller libraries, and a few staff cut.

That is sad to hear. Library systems are asked to do more with less and less support.

It's funny. A few days after the reduction in work force has ended, we now have 4 library jobs out there for hire. We usually advertise the jobs for 2 weeks but due to the number of resumes received because of unemployment, we are only advertising for one week.

I really surprised they just didn't rehire one of the laid off workers, or is that what they are doing?

Those laid off people may have moved into other areas or retired. Sometimes positions open up that the laid off workers are not qualified for.

For example, one public library in our area reducopened its work force through retirement and outsourcing its tech services. When a branch manager position opened most of the laid off workers would not have the qualifications to apply.
