This week's article is a review of Pagan Prayer Beads by John Michael Greer and Clare Vaughn. I think it's a very good resource to get you started with prayer beads. Do you use them already?

Hi Trish,

Thanks for this article. It is very informative. I ordered the book and am really excited to get it and get started on my own prayer beads.

I have been reading the book and I love it! I have tentatively designed my own necklace and will be off to the bead store in a week or so. This is so fun and inspiring!

I'm so happy you're enjoying it Phyllis. Have fun shopping at the bead store. I'm actually going to do a rune rosary and make the beads from polymer clay. It's going to be very rustic looking, but it fits what I have in mind.

That sounds very exciting. I never thought of making my own beads in that way. I want to have my totems on my first necklace for spirituality and strength. If I cannot find what I need, then I will try the polymer clay and make my own little totems which may be a better idea anyway for then I can put my own spirituality into them easily as I make them.

PS: what type of beading thread do you use? I want to be able to sometimes wear my necklace and sometimes carry it in my pocket and may be handling it often. Would beading wire be best and tiger-tail or flexible?

Sorry I missed this message Phyllis. I think I might use tiger tail. I don't need mine to be too flexible since I won't be wearing it. I'm sure you can find a flexible wire that will allow you to wear the beads and still have a sturdy strand.

I think for my purposes, I will get a flexible cording so it will easily go into my pocket without much fuss. Then I can wear it at times, too. I have not yet found all the beads I want. There are some special ones I may have to order from Shipwreck Beads. I am going to incorporate some of my Native American antique trade beads in the necklace with my totem animals.

Has anyone made a prayer bead necklace yet? This book Trish reviewed is a wonderful, helpful source.
