Hi everyone,
My guild has issued a challenge for us to do a Art Quilt (12 x 12) that represents our roots or anything that makes us feel grounded. I have NEVER done an art quilt! I do not have any artistic ability unless I see it in a pattern. However, I do have the ideas in my head, just not sure how to get them in fabric. I want to represent the Greek flag along with a pic of my Grandfather, a cross to represent Christ and perhaps a peach to represent Georiga, where I was born and raised. Does anyone have any suggestions to give me some direction??????

Cindy, I really feel bad that we generally try to help everyone who asks a question here, and there has been no suggestions for you. The only time I was asked for do a block that represented me, I cross stitched a 9-patch (tic tac toe) frame and then cross stiched 9 'scenes' that would be me - a book with reading glasses, a hot cup of tea, a sewing machine, etc. I cross stitch more than I quilt so even using that medium said something about me.

Of course, this is not helping you; but it is explaining that I don't have any help I can offer you.

Good Luck, and I hope you get some helpful responses! GrannyH

Hi, I'm no designer of quilts, just a few thoughts, incorporate
the Greek flag diagonally across the square, as it is a rectangle in the blue and white, that leaves you with two triangles to fill in with a peach and the photo of grandfather

Oh I forgot the cross, couldn't that be the one on the flag's
lefthand corner?

Hi Cindy, thanks for joining the forum. For my money, when ever the "brief" for the quilt is so wide, I tend to take the idea further and look at representations rather than just static objects. For instance, what about using peach colored fabric, instead of creating a peach. Or using something that represents your grandfather - did he have a hobby, or a particular quirk that you can represent him with? As for the greek cross, you could create something stylised, or perhaps, embroider a map of Greece, and to represent your faith, perhaps a particular color, or a personal sign embroidered in gold.

Just some thoughts, let us know how you get on.
Cheerio for now

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. What I ended up doing was making the Greek flag from fabric and making a cross from fabric. Then I used the cotton fabric paper that is used with ink jet printers. I printed a picture of my grandfather, grandmother, mother, son, daughter and one of my husband and I on our wedding day! The title of my piece is "I am Louis Stamatis' Granddaughter" I used the "I am" under each picture to designate who I am. On the cross I put "I am a daughter of the King". It turned out very nice and very personal. If I knew how, I would post a picture!! Can that be done? If so, please explain. Thanks again.

Cindy, Before I go into full explanation, let me begin by saying I have never included a photo.

The most important detail for you to know is that the photo must be somewhere in the WEB WORLD before you can add it here. (Photobucket or Flickr, or other storage) Then check out one of the following:

1) Click on FAQ above - then click on 'How do I add an image to my message'.

or

2)Click on 'Reply' which is the first option at the bottom of this post instead of using the 'Quick Reply' in the next box. Across the top of the box where you type your post is a series of boxes. The first is the smiley faces many of us add on a regular basis. crazy The fourth box says 'Add an image'. Click that and do what it tells you.

Hope it works, cause I would love to see your block. GrannyH
