Everyone talks about all the problems (including me) of solo travel preparedness, issues, safety... the list goes on. I do have to give a shout out to the best part about solo travel - being totally selfish and doing exactly what I want. If I want to sleep in, I do. If I want to skip the itinerary and go off the beaten path, I can. If I want to stop at every historical marker, I don't have to listen to anyone complain about not getting somewhere fast enough.

I usually travel solo for just the reasons you mention. Some of my favorite trips have been cross-country drives with a destination in mind but plenty of blue highways on the way. I try to stop at every National Wildlife Preserve I pass; I like them even more than the more dramatic National Parks. (although I stop at them, too) NWPs are usually fairly deserted, except for the birds and the scenery, and I like being the only person around.
I also like visiting touristy places off-season, when things are quiet, less expensive and the proprietors of the few shops and restaurants still open are SO glad to see me!
