mad HELPHELPHELP!!!!!
I'm not sure if there's ANYBODY out there to assist in my crisis. I am presently re-doing a school library - brand new and wow. Whilst sorting books in the store room today, I made the vulgar, disgusting discovery of TERMITES in about 12 boxes of books. NOW WHAT??? I know I need to call in pest control asap., but how do I save the books that have just been 'touched' by the buggers?? Capice? I'm a wreck!!!! Advice please??? eek

Capice - I haven't heard that word in awhile. smile

Call the termite control company and ask them. If you have an extension service with your local government, they may be able to advise you (without trying to sell you anything). The books may have to be fumigated.

I don't know if you can really save the books - the termites have gotten all their feet and everything all over them. What if a kid was handling the book later and was turning the pages with their hands, then eating chips? They could get that stuff into their mouth ... I can't even imagine a cleaning process that would get all the pages clean.

Ok - I'm (obviousely) tossing the 'termited' books, and the rest I'm in the process (there are 15 000) of vacuum sealing with mothe balls..... I'll give you the results in 2014!!!! What a shame....

That really is a shame, that the books were ruined like that.

I'm really nervous about the moth balls. From Wikipedia -

"Mothballs are highly toxic when ingested, causing serious illness or death. In addition to this, using a very large quantity of mothballs in a basement or a living space may cause serous respiratory problems in people living in the space."

That could be even worse than termite saliva in terms of danger to any readers ...

Yes I prefer cedar balls or lavender for keeping away moths.

Right Gillian we have cedar balls and blocks in our closets, we have found a sweater or two in the past with holes chewed in them.

Call a Pest control in Phoenix to help you rid of those termites. They might as well assist you with what to do with those books. Good luck!

I have termites in my timbers in my tiny home and outbuildings. I do have to treat that with termitey poison, which i hate, but i need to protect my home. frown

I also use diatomaceous earth sprinkled around to keep a line of bugs from entering anew once treated.

I have never heard that termite feet are disease vectors. I don't think anyone could get ill from handling books with termite exposure?
