Hi everyone, I've posted my weekly newsletter today with a little gift of a very interesting blog on the use of selvedges that we usually discard whilst quilting.(see my latest newsletter for the website address).

Well, I was wondering if you have any ideas for the use of the selvedges? Post your ideas here.

I thought this was a fun wacky topic, grin one of those things that pass the time. Instead, I found the ideas in the blog to be nothing more than AMAZING. It looks to me as if anything made from fabric could be made from 'selvedges'. I don't have anything specific in mind right now, but it's worth pondering.

Do you ever wonder where those 'clever' minds come from? confused GrannyH

Yes, GrannyH, it amazes me. One of the things I've used selvedge edges for is to tie my plants and shrubs to star pickets when they're just getting established. I don't tie them too tight, but give them enough room to sway without being blown out of the soil. It works great and by the time they've outgrown being tied up, the fabric has rotted or deteriorated into the soil. I also keep them rolled in a ball, and use them like string. There's always something that needs to be tied together, I find they're very handy.

Cheerio for now

I have been collecting selvages for a while now to make something with. Some of the members of thequiltingboard have been saving and sending to me. It takes quite a while for the selvages to add up to enough to do something with. But I think I am pretty darn close. I am not quite sure what I am going to do with them. A few different ideas. All depends on how many I end up with when I decide it is time to start. Which that day is very near. I think I am tired of waiting. LOL..... I thought about how to sew/join them too. Obviously there has to be a way to keep the selvage part, so I believe I will be using fusible interface. I might even use the kind that is for quilts that comes in squares or triangles, originaly (I think) for water quilting or whatever it is called. The name escapes me right now. Its called an age thing. LOL..... Well that is my spin on selvages.

I have a bunch of them because I thought it would be a good way to coordinate colors when I was stuck, but then I found this page: check out this page- it inspired me to start collecting and cutting my selvedges wider.

I have to said yet again, AMAZING!! laugh I have always thought I was somewhat creative, but not at all in comparision.

DonnaRae, I spent a little time yesterday on the quiltingboard.com and checked out some of your posts about selvedges. WOW! Have you made any decisions about what you will make yet? I can't say I'd be a good source for these edges cause I use just a small about of fabric at a time with these "State" blocks. smile If I remember to save them - How wide do you want the edge strip to be? It sounded as if it might be 1 1/2 inches, but I was not positive. I also wasn't sure if you just wanted the white edge or if you wanted the other edge as well. The site Judie gave us had very colorful items. Let me know.

Yep, glad you checked it out! I kinda decided that 1 1/2 would be good size. I just need enough ot overlap. But some have sent larger and some smaller. Believe me I will use all! (-: Most of the people that send me some just save up till they have enough to send. Geez, 1 selvage is enough for me. (-: But it takes ALOT to do something with them. But they are adding up an I am pretty dang close, unless I change my mind and do something small but most have already done all those things. Wanted to do something different! And thank everyone for the links. I like looking at what everyone is doing. Gets my blood flowing.
