I am a college Learning Specialist and the mom of a son with LD/ADD who graduated college successfully. I have sat on both sides of the desk regarding post-secondary transition, and I full well understand the anxiety students and parents feel at this critical time. At work, I am dismayed by the number of students who arrive unprepared for college's unique challenges and lack navigational skills that bode for success. Many, metaphorically, end up lighting a match to their parents' tuition dollars. If only these kids had known what to expect and learned about the college system in advance, the results might have been far different. Because I have a son with the same issues, and he succeeded, I know others can - I am passionate about college success for this cohort. I have started an elist for people who would like to receive free articles on post-secondary transition. Contact me at TransitionSuccess@gmail.com to join the list! [color:#3333FF] [/color]

Thank you for your comment.
I would definately agree that these students leave high school completely unprepared. I think as parents we are so focused on today, that we (a) forget to plan beyond that and (b) don't know what our children have a right to expect from transition.
I would encourage any parent to start learning about transition as soon as your child reaches the high school level.

I would love to be on that list. My daughter is depressed because her college aspirations seem impossible with her LD. She has memory problems and has a hard time with recall, but she writes very well. She would like to pursue a degree in Literature.

She enrolled in a local community college but did not register for classes as yet. She is undergoing medical treatments and we wanted to wait until next semester to see how her mind and body would adjust.

I'll send you an email!

hi im Luis Antonio S. Tutaan, a 2nd year college studetns in the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines im taking up Special Education i have noticed that the topic is about students with LD aspiring to study college in what i have learned for the past 2 years studying Special Education that the main goal of SPED is to mainstream students with exceptionalties in a regular classroom setting so there is still hope that students with LD to be able to enroll in a good college.
