I was reading a comparison book between the US and Japan.
In the US the average woman cleans 59 minutes a day, the average guy cleans 26 minutes a day. Yes, it's a bit unfair.
But in Japan the average woman cleans 3 hours and 1 minute a day ... and the average guy cleans only 9 minutes a day!!

LOL. And you know what? To add insult to injury to Americans, the average Japanese home is much, much smaller than homes in America!
I wish I would pay more attention to cleaning. My house is pretty clean, I guess. No clutter. But it isn't spotless. When I first moved in here and wasn't writing as much, I cleaned a lot every day. I noticed that I was paying a lot for cleansers. So we don't clean as often and save on cleansers. Just doin' my part to help the planet and save on our budget. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

LOL that sounds like a great reason!
I am SO happy with my microfiber towels, speaking of saving money and the environment. I use them instead of paper towels and have been using FAR less paper towels now.

Since I use the Flylady system my house (now RV) is always just 15 minutes away from being clean. I just maintain by doing a little bit each day.
Having less STUFF helps a whole lot and that is something I still work on.
I don't know what would take three hours a DAY, in my estimation. What can get that dirty each day? What are those women DOING? Are they washing their sheets in the local river? :-D

Okay, I've heard about Flylady three times in three days. First heard about it months ago, but haven't gone to the site. Let me get over there right now! LOL.

I can tell you, Jilly! They wash what is already clean!!! They clean the nooks and crannies of everything, including appliances. They shine and polish! sigh. Of course, I do not do this. I'm a disgrace to my race.

I don't think that is true. I know many many Japanese women. Many Japanese women are not as neat as Americans think. Previous generations of Japanese were clean, but not young generations.

My daughter-in-law is Japanese and her home is always spotless. My son has been to Japan several times to visit with in-laws and he says their homes are always spotless and feel so clean and fresh.

I imagine it might be that younger generations are finding other things to do (i.e. play Farmville ) and will keep less clean houses!

It does sound clean and fresh - and mentally restful - to have everything perfect. A part of me yearns for that.

Nope, that is too much for one day. I like to break it over the week!

I'd like to clean all the time, but if I do, when will I write? And garden? And cook? And spend time with my family and friends?
My MIL devoted her life to cleaning and my husband does not have good memories of her impossible standards.

Ok, let me make a deal with you. You come clean for me and I will do the other stuff for you(lol). I HATE to clean but my mom was like your MIL and like your husband try to forget that "trauma" from the past. I guess that is why I am the total opposite = clean as needed, not as a routine. I'd like to clean all the time, but if I do, when will I write? And garden? And cook? And spend time with my family and friends?

I see it the same way. If im cleaning all the time then i dont have time for life, and life can be short, we need to enjoy it while we can.

I completely agree that obsessing about a clean house all day long is probably not a good use of time. On the other hand, many studies show that people tend to be more relaxed and content when their home is clean *to a certain degree*. They also save a ton of time because now they can find what they need to find. Their health also improves. So the key is not to clean obsessively However, there is a way to clean efficiently so you spend a minimum of time and keep your serenity, health, and time usage as top notch as possible! That's of course a prime topic for our cleaning forum area, on how to do that
