Is anyone aware that you can lose up to 40% of your eyesight without realising it? I work for RNIB (Royal National Institute for Blind People) and am constantly trying to ensure my friends are aware of the state of their eye health. It's such a scary statistic and the only way of ensuring your eyes are as healthy as they appear to be is to get them tested regularly.

A quick trip to your opticians will ensure there are no underlying problems with your eyes that you aren't aware of like glaucoma which has no symptoms.

Your optician will be able to answer any questions you have, or you can visit the RNIB website BellaOnline ALERT: Raw URLs are not allowed in these forums for security reasons. Please use UBB code. If you don't know how to do UBB code just post here for help - we will help out!

I know what you mean SarahLloyd about people not realising how important your sight is. I always get my eyes tested but many of my friends don't. I can't imagine how devastated I would be if I suddenly found out I'd lost 40% of my vision - it'd make me think about how many things I'd been missing out on without realising!

I just realized it last night. I had some shooting lights and floaters in my eyes suddenly and read on the internet that I could be getting a detached retina. So one trip to the ER and the opthamologist later, I found I do have a floater that's still attached to my retina and could tear eventually. Product of "old" eyes, they said.

Never thought of my eyes getting older along with the rest of me.
