I have knitted a sweater that is way too large for me and I am thinking of ripping it out and using the yarn. Any suggestions with using already used yarn.

It depends on the material. If it is wool, unwinding and then letting the fiber relax. Here is a great article, Knitty

Thanks for that link Marge. I have reused several acrylic yarns by pulling it out and wrapping it in a slightly tight ball. I let it sit for about a week and it worked great.
