This is a discussion that goes along with my article for the week on How to Properly Shampoo Hair.

Now I know everyone will have their own views and opinions and one of the things I would like to see happen is for others to talk about what has worked when shampooing your hair. Also what doesn't work.

So please feel free to post comments, questions and suggestions. Feel free to discuss the article and ask me questions if there is something you are not clear on.

If I do not have the answer I will find it for you within reason.

So come in let's talk hair.

If you have not read the article, you can view it here:

good article. I would however suggest, that a person always shampoo twice. The first shampoo is to remove surface dirt and oils, and a second shampoo will thoroughly penetrate and clean the whole hair and scalp.

Is there any shampoo that actually helps with split ends? I don't mind getting my ends snipped, but I'm trying to actually grow my hair longer and every time I get it to shoulder length, my stylist needs to "trim my ends" which takes it back to short again. The last 2 times I went in, I wouldn't let her trim it, but now she is telling me that my ends are getting "really bad". This happens with EVERY stylist I've gone to except for one that I had when I lived in New York. She managed to trim without taking off any noticable length.
I see advertisments for shampoo that repairs split ends, but is there such a thing? HELP!!!

Only regular trims, good shampoos and GREAT conditioners, and not using brushes on wet hair will get rid of your split ends.

It all depends on if it was done with a round brush which is designed to be used with a blow dryer. It smooths the cuticles and helps with the drying process. other brushes just breaks the hair.

Also Dianne Avon has a anti-frizz serum used s just for dry ends and frizzy ends.

If you want to grow your hair longer give extra care to the ends. If possible wear your hair in a way that will tuck your ends so they don't die and split.

Up-do hair styles are the best or even a bun. How you wear your hair and what hair styles you go with will make a lot of difference for your ends.

The hair at the root level with take care of itself but the ends will need extra work in order to aquire length.

Yes you are absolutely right, although I have to wash my hair almost everyday or a least every 2 days. Because of the frequency of washing my hair I really do only have to wash once.

Now if you wait longer in between washes say once a week or every two weeks, then a second wash would definitely be in order. Some times three depends.

This was one of those things I left up to the reader to decide for themselves. If they feel they need another wash then so be it.

Also it depends on how good your shompoo is and how hot your water is when washing the hair. If you have good shampoo it may not take 2 washes. There are some shampoos that can make your hair squeaky clean just by one wash. THen there are those you have to fight with using more shampoo then needed.

When you wash your hair a second time, even though it is thought to help thoroughly cleanse the scalp and hair, it is really the way we strip our hair of all its natural oils and for African Americans or any one with kinky, tightly coiled hair, it can take up to 2 weeks for the moisture to be replaced in the hair and even make it to our ends.

If done corretly 1 wash is enough to really clean your. We are creatures of habits though.

The only problem that I have with less frequent shampoo is the smell of unwashed hair...drives me insane after a couple of days.

Dianne, just tell her that you don't want your ends trimmed. I hate it when hairdressers are pushy. Or maybe go somewhere else and explain to them smile

trimming the ends should only be 1/8 - 1/4 inch. She shouldn't go crazy. If she does.... fire her

thanks guys I'm going to try that next time. Sometimes they SAY they are only going to trim and they start in the back so by the time I can see what their doing and they get to the front - I've lost a good inch plus.

Hello! Three of my sons are biracial triplets (black and white). we adopted them at birth, having been chosen by the birth mother at the very beginning of her pregnancy. We found out what their ethnicity is a couple of months after we learned we would be having triplets. This was before we knew their sex. WHen I thought at least one would be a girl I was so nervous about their hair. I found myself staring at every African American woman I happened to see in the store who I thought had pretty hair. Needless to say I got some veeery strange looks in return! When we learned they were all boys I relaxed a little, but have still been soemwhat anxious that I do it "right." When they're teenagers I don't want them to look at their baby pictures and "oh Mom" me!

They will be 3 in April and just had their first haircut earlier this month. I was hovering over the three hairstylists in the salon like crazy. Fortunately the owner understood exactly what I wanted and was able to oversee the other two. Their hair was really wild and out of control, reaching the tops of their shoulders. We ahd roughly three inches cut off, so it's still very curly, but they look more like boys now!

My two identical guys have very dark hair that is soft with loose curls. My fraternal triplet has light brown hair, but his curls are much tighter, very coarse, and dry. Before I got it cut we'd have a battle every day because if I didn't slather it and comb it through it'd turn into a disaser. This process is a tough sekll to a two year old! Now that it's a little shorter (not too short) it is much easier to manage.

I still wash their hair with tearless shampoo, because they're young enough that they get it in their eyes. Before it was cut I resorted to concoting a conditioner at home out of eggs, mayonnaise, olive oil and honey. I haven't used conditioner since we had it cut, but I do wet it and spray detangler every day beore combing it out. Is it important to condition it at this age? Unless they get it really dirty I only shampoo it about once a week. Is this ok?

hair oil or conditioner is very important to ethnic hair. The kinky curliness can make it more dry because the natural scalp oils doint make it all the way through the curls

I have noticed that my trio's hair is much drier than mine- even the two who have softer less coarse hair. I actually really liked the way the mayo-oil-egg stuff worked on it; the comb would just slide through afterwards!

Jamie,

Looks like you are on the right path. I can tell you this though. When my children were young 2 boys and a girl I use a spray conditioner, leave in daily moisturizer by Pantene and Luster' Pink. It is an oil conditioning lotion. It comes in light and reg. There is a whole line of hair care products that work great together. The shampoo is vey nourishing and soothing to the hair. You can feel the difference in your fingers as you wash the hair.
