Are you sure that the bobbin is threaded and loaded correctly? Check the instructions carefully to make sure that you are putting it in the right way.
On my (very old) machine, before putting the fabric under the needle it helps to run the needle into the hole once and pull up the bottom thread. Then I pull both threads to one side and hang onto them with a finger when starting to sew the seam. I can let go as soon as a few stitches have been taken, but if I don't do that the bottom thread tends to pull back under and snarl.
