when I am sewing on my machine I always get a bunching of threads on the underside of my material. I have adjusted the tension a number of times, but the result is always the same. Is there a set tension for sewing?

Are you sure that the bobbin is threaded and loaded correctly? Check the instructions carefully to make sure that you are putting it in the right way.
On my (very old) machine, before putting the fabric under the needle it helps to run the needle into the hole once and pull up the bottom thread. Then I pull both threads to one side and hang onto them with a finger when starting to sew the seam. I can let go as soon as a few stitches have been taken, but if I don't do that the bottom thread tends to pull back under and snarl.

I had the same problem on my old machine but I have not had any problems with my new one. It does matter how the bobbin is put in and on older machines best to hold thread for a few stitches.
