I have a scarf pattern which states "knit 2, knit into the back of the next stitch, purl 1". How do I knit into the back of the next stitch?

Assuming you knit the same way I do...

with yarn in the back, insert the tip of the right needle into the st as if to purl BUT bring the tip of the right needle up behind the left needle (rather than in front. Then knit the st as usual.

"Through the back" refers to the part of the stitch that is in back of the needle. What it does is twist the stitch.
