I recently got some new patterns for knitting American Girl doll clothes. The instructions say "cast on 89 st (including edge stitches). This gives me two more stitches than the pattern stitch needs. Another instruction says "on 20 st (plus 2 edge st). I've never heard of edge stitches before. What do I do with them? What are they for? I noticed that all patterns from this site call for edge stitches.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, there are a number of ways to knit those edge stitches, but the are almost always there. The pattern should, as you said, begin at the second stitch.
One way (and the easiest to explain) is to always knit the first and last stitch on each row. If you are going to join the pieces you'll have this first and last stitch to use for the seam.

Hi, and welcome.

I always add 2 stitches to every pattern, to use as a tidy edge. Instead of knitting both however, I always slip the first by putting the needle through the front of the stitch and knit the last. This way the 2 stitches form a very neat chain stitch edge.
