Hi Vance, Very interesting article! I lived in New Jersey for the first 45 years of my life. Then moved to Missouri with my husband (he was born and raised here.) When I first came here I went online to learn a little of the history and read quite a bit about the civil war battles fought here. Missouri was LEGALLY a free, or Union state. But, I would venture to guess, the people were predominantly Rebel sympathizers. So Jesse James is somewhat of a folk hero here. There is a place called Merimec Caverns, which was supposed to be a hideout for the James Gang. It is an amazing place to visit and is about an hour southwest of St. Louis. When you take a tour of the cavern they show you the place where evidence was found of the James Gang's campsite. You can learn more about the cavern here. Having spent most of my life in the Northeast, it was a revelation to me to see how much Rebel sympathy still exists here. I think Jesse James was driven into his political ideas by his upbringing, but went way beyond that and ended up a common criminal.

You may find it interesting as well, if you haven't already read about it.

Thanks for the link, Vance. Very interesting article.
In NJ, the historical sites are mainly from the Revolution, "Washington slept here" kinds of places. So it's fun for me to become used to sites from the Civil War, because not much of that happened in NJ.

Well - cousin Jesse was definitely a criminal and killer. As with a lot of "ruffians" from those days, however, he was also thought of as a folk hero. When we were kids, we played "cowboys" and always fought over who got to be Jesse - he was our distant cousin on my maternal Grandmother's side of the family. Somewhere in our family, buried deep in someone's trunk, are pictures of our James cousins. We overlooked, as kids often do, the fact that he was a criminal of a very bad sort and raised him to the status of a hero, as I am sure many kids did.
Great article, Vance!

Oh - forgot to tell you. A friend of ours, a grade school teacher, is a distant cousin of the Dalton's. How ironic is that? So far, and I pray never, have there turned up any "bad seeds" in the family since Jesse's day.
