High Fructose Corn syrup is a chemically produced "super sugar" from corn, that is in almost everything including ketchup, salad dressings, pop, just about anything you can think of that is NOT whole natural food. One of the chemical properties of high fructose corn syrup is to tell your brain you're still hungry and specifically want more sugar even after you have just eaten.
A good sugar substitute is Agave Nectar from a plant grown in Mexico. It actually is used in Tequilia to make it smooth. You can get it at health food stores like Wild Oats. It is sweeter than sugar, and in a liquid form. I use it in green tea and baking.

Ultra-Metabolism by Dr. Mark Hyman. It has foods to eat, foods to avoid, menus, recipes, and more importantly, explanations of what the right food can do for your body, and what the wrong food can do to your body. The $17 will be well worth your peace of mind and health. It is an audio book that you can listen to easily over and over, but also has print-outs.
Let me know if you have any questions. I'll be glad to answer what I can from my experiences. I had to find something myself because my triglyceride level was 479, almost off the charts. The knowledge from this book along with the whole food diet have made a tremendous difference in just 2 months. Normal triglyceride levels and lost 20 pounds and 2 pant sizes with no medication with no other modifications other than the food I'm eating. I've not been hungry and you can also eat chocolate as long as it's 70% cocoa and you don't go crazy and eat a couple of chocolate bars every day. I've not felt deprived at all. BTW, I came from drinking 6-8 cokes a day with lots of snacks, dairy and hamburger in my diet.
