I have always been a firm believer in going on vacation from the time I started working in the corporate world. Vacations became even more important when I became self-employed. I didn't take long vacations my first two years in business while I was building it, but starting with the third year, I went on 4 weeks per year up to 7 weeks per year before I sold my massage practice. Still self-employed offering continuing education, consulting and coaching, I take about 5-6 months...YES MONTHS...of vacation!

Back in 1998, I read and book called "Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui" and I that it was cool that the author Karen Kingston works only 6 months of the year spending the remainder of the year at her retreat in Bali. So I made it a goal to do something similar.

Vacationing is important not only to relax and rejuvenate but it gets those creative juices going. I get some of my best ideas (both business and otherwise) while on vacation.

Do I vacation? I try to take a week each year (my employer only permits 2 weeks each year). Typically, the other week I'm eligible for is eaten up by activities other than vacation; but it is used.

Well, I guess that depends on how we are defining "vacation." If you mean time away from work, then "yes." If you mean actually travelling somewhere, then "no."

I take mini vacations throughout the year. Sometimes I go for a theme -- like I love doing needlework so I make a route of needlework shops and events to go to. I did this two years ago going up to Northern California.

Linda - I get some of my best ideas on vacation too. We drove across the country this summer and my husband likes to drive. That gave me a whole lot of time to read and think.

I wasn't brought up in a family that took vacations. So it's difficult for me to go and just have fun. I'm learning!
