I am interested to know the change in your choices now and why.

Pregnant teenager with HIV - I think that it would be better for her and her baby to be where they had access to the best health care available.

Beggar - I would worry that this person might be complacement and not helpful in trying to survive. Further, there are many beggars who are mentally ill. As with the pregnant teen, I would want that person to be able to receive help.

Business Tycoon - I think business tycoons are used to throwing money at everyday problems rather than having to deal with them up close and personal. I don't think s/he would add much to the group.

Out of curiosity, does anyone out there want to keep the pregnant teenager with HIV? Tell us why.

The religious sect does not corner the market on morality or values. You can "assume" that an Atheist has values just like anyone else.

If I knew more about her, I might change my mind. Who knows -- maybe she's a fantastic hunter, or an expert at identifying edible vegetation. If she had special knowledge or skills that would be very useful to the group, I would consider keeping her, regardless of her condition.

An interesting situation. Taking previous comments into consideration I would leave behind...

1. The Cop with the Gun, not because the person is a police officer, but the gun could add an unstable and threatening element to the group. The cop may use it in a way that threats the group or someone in the group could take it and use it to threaten the group. The gun, not the person, brings a element of potential instability and danger which threatens the safety of the group.

2. Pregnant Teenager with HIV, for the reasons already mentioned. Also, because the addition of an infant could strain the resources of the group. The child could become an extra mouth to feed that might strain the minimal resources of the group.

3. Prostitute for the health reasons mentioned. I had thought of keeping her for her potential street smarts and untapped survival skills, but the health factor chage my opinion.

Isn't it interesting that two women in the list can be excluded so easily for having or potentially having STDs. We have know way of knowing if any of the men are STD carriers. Seems that there is a bit of Gender bias in the list. Are women getting excluded for being women or is it easier to label them and exclude them based on our concepts of their roles as women? Is there Gender bias or discrimination here?

Cara, to answer you post about if i think the cop, doctor, begger,business tycoon, and islander, are all men all i can say. OMG I hope NOT To be trapped on an island with even one male would be a nightmare! lol

I really do not think that the male/female issue would change my mind except for the cop and the tycoon. A female of either of these could be far too aggressive and bullying. Often, when women are in the careers that are dominated by men, they have to become far more aggressive and in your face in order to keep up or surpass the men and often lose the nurturing/emphatic and intuitive nature that women naturally have.

Very good point, I thought about the implication of STDs. Why do we assume that a prostitute is automatically a woman? There are many male prostitutes out there. However, we (including myself) naturally assume that prostitutes are mostly females. To answer your question, I thing in this case, it is easier to label women and exclude them based on our concepts of their roles. There is definitely a gender bias here. Thanks for bringing up a good point. It just goes to show there is still an undercurrent of deep seeded conception about women in our society. Even the women including myself are guilty of it.
