I'm seeing container gardens with 'purposes'. Like Bar-B-Que gardens with all the herbs you need to BBQ and then you put the container by the BBQ grill so it's right there when you need the herbs.
Also have seen a pizza garden --
Anybody growing one of these or know of others?

I'm interested in how to get started making a container garden to grow various herbs. What do I need? How do I start?

There was a wonderful article in today's paper about herbs for beginners.

It is REALLY easy to grow most herbs, they love a sunny window!

First you have to buy the herbs you like to cook with smile This depends on your own style of course! If you let us know what types of food you like to eat we can help out.

Then you need to look at your window area and see what kind of a pot will fit. Some people have space for big, round pots. Other people need thin, rectangular pots. If you post a photo of your area we can help with that too.

Then you plant the seeds according to the instructions! I'm growing lots of herbs right now and will be posting photos. Mine will all be outside for now though smile

I have a specific container garden for parsley, and one for bay leaves, and a sage pot but I could do with some help on coriander and basil. I've never had any success with these two favorites. Too cold maybe!

Those herbs love heat. I've had success with basil on a south-facing window sill and in the greenhouse. Wait to plant coriander till consistently warm weather.

I was once told that only witches could grow parsley! (Not true...or is it?)

Parsley and coriander are tricky. They need a load of sun and if you overwater them, they just melt. I had coriander last summer, but it went to seed quickly and just wilted away.

The parsley is still fine; it came back. It seems to like me.

I just put a new batch of herb seeds in my Aerogrow, and the basil is the first to come up. I love to garden, and the Aerogrow has been a delight to me.

Basil does not like to grow around any other plant, or so I was told. It needs to be by itself.

I have always wanted to grow a huge pot of herbs for a "Spaghetti Garden". Those herbs are very aromatic. Parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, oregano, and garlic. Maybe I will try that this year.

I have always had great success with chives and sage. They just seem to come back on their own, and I live in Massachusetts where it gets very cold.

I had a question about sage in fact - I'll post that in a separate thread so we don't get confused!
