There was a wonderful article by Patricia Bauer: A Word, A Movie, and My Family's Battle,in Sunday's Washington Post.

She explains better than I ever could how I feel each time I hear the word, or see my son flinch as he hears it.

Quote:

With each of these incidents, I hear what others perhaps don't hear. This word, derived from a clinical term used to describe people like my daughter, carries a cultural subtext so huge that we don't even notice it. By using it, we threaten years of progress toward a society that accepts and values all its citizens, including the 14.3 million with cognitive disabilities.

Thank you, Patricia, from the bottom of my heart.

I wish our local weekly shopper would warn people about the language and characterization used in the movie Tropic Thunder - most neighbors I have spoken with about it were not aware that it is about anything other than a war comedy and the actors who are in it. Some have said they would not see it anyway - with soldiers in harm's way in Iraq and Afghanistan, they don't see the humor in any war scene.

I told them we didn't see the humor in creating mean new catch phrases that will be used to humiliate school children with developmental disabilities for years to come - but the studio didn't see anything wrong with that, either.
