The Plimoth Society has decided, as a project, to re-create a 17th Century ladies embroidered jacket (it's a project very close to my heart, as it's an ambition of mine to make the same for me).

They are blogging about it as "The Embroiderers' Story" and you can keep up with it HERE

Whether you are into historical embroidery or not, this is a really fascinating article, as they are going into quite a lot of detail about the different stitches and materials they use.

I absolutely LOVE historical embroidery. I am going to keep my eye on the site.

About 15 years ago, I lived near the University of Texas at Arlington, they had Continuing Ed. classes taught by a woman from the UK and I savored every one of them.

Can anyone help me identify this embroidery stitch? Or give me your best guess of how it is done? Sorry about the poor quality of the pictures, it was the best I could get.

Thanks,
Joanne

It looks like back stitch, but unfortunately, the picture is a little too blurry to make out the details complately.

Can you tell us what it;s stitched on? (eg: clothing, cuff, or whatever - that may help me identify it). Also, is it stitched in metallic thread or just plain thread?

It could be a laced back stitch, but, again, would need to be able to see a real close up of the picture.

Joanne, if you want to send the pictures to me at embroidery@bellaonline.com I can see if I can enlarge them for a closer look.

Hi Megan,
I am fascinated by the embroidered jacket you mention above. Would it be alright if I mention your link in the Renaissance Forum? I think some of my readers who are interested in clothing of the 1600's would be interested.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Helen

Sorry to take so long to get back to you - the link got lost in a computer problem.

Feel free to use the link - I have no problems at all about that. I actually intend to make one of these jackets myself - I have the linen, and am drafting the pattern I intend to use.

I'll keep everybody up to date with my progress!
