Hello, I am new to knitting and I really need some help with a pattern. I am knitting an afghan and no matter what I've tried I cannot finish a row without running out of sts.
Example:
This pattern has 124 sts.

K2, P1 *K1, [K2tog, yo, K2] 3 times; P1, K6, P1, K1, [K1,yo, SSK, K1] 3 times**, P1, K6, P1, rep from * across, ending last rep at **, P1, K2

When I did this row I got to the third time of doing P1, K6, P1, K1 but could only get 5 of the K6 before I had three left. I added knitting rings to keep my count correct and wrote out the row on paper for each section. I end up with still a 124 sts. when I'm done. Could someone please help me figure out what I am doing wrong.

Thank you so much.

I haven't actually tried this but if you check the math on your pattern, it looks like the pattern is a multiple of 41 stitches. To repeat the pattern 3 times you would need 123 stitches plus 6 stitches to put the 3 sts. on each end. So, you would need to cast on a total of 129 stitches. Also, when doing an afghan there is a trick to cast on (or chain, if crocheting) a few extra stitches. That way you can complete the pattern across and bind of the extras and weave the end in.

Try it on paper and see what you come up with )124 slashes and then above it write the corresponding stitches to see if you would be lacking stitches (then a type O ) or you actually forgot to y/o....what does ssk stand for...anyone????

SSK = slip, slip, then knit the two slipped stitches together.

Hello KnittingCissie: Hopefully you haven't gotten disgusted with this pattern and decided to not finish it. Your stitch count is correct at 124. The pattern reads a bit tricky...

You have this:
K2, P1 *K1, [K2tog, yo, K2] 3 times; P1, K6, P1, K1, [K1,yo, SSK, K1] 3 times**, P1, K6, P1, rep from * across, ending last rep at **, P1, K2

On the last repeat, you don't do the last P1,K6,P1 in the sequence as you did before ("ending the last repeat at **"), you do P1,K2 only.

Therefore, written out it becomes:

K2, P1 *K1, [K2tog, yo, K2], [K2tog, yo, K2], [K2tog, yo, K2]; P1, K6, P1, K1, [K1,yo, SSK, K1],[K1,yo, SSK, K1], [K1,yo, SSK, K1], P1, K6, P1, K1, [K2tog, yo, K2], [K2tog, yo, K2], [K2tog, yo, K2]; P1, K6, P1, K1, [K1,yo, SSK, K1],[K1,yo, SSK, K1], [K1,yo, SSK, K1], P1, K6, P1, K1, [K2tog, yo, K2], [K2tog, yo, K2], [K2tog, yo, K2]; P1, K6, P1, K1, [K1,yo, SSK, K1],[K1,yo, SSK, K1], [K1,yo, SSK, K1], P1, K2

stitch counts: 3, 1, 4+4+4, 9, 4+4+4, 8, 1, 4+4+4, 9, 4+4+4, 8, 1, 4+4+4, 9, 4+4+4, 3 (where 4+4+4 are the patterning stitches)

You don't need to add extra stitches at the cast on and adjust on the first row unless you feel comfortable doing this and can keep track. I hope this helps. If you have questions, feel free to send me a message.
