What projects are you all taking on vacation this summer or if you are in another hemisphere, what project did you take on your summer vacation?

Small or lightweight items are best for travel. When I went to TX to visit family recently, I took a half skein of variegated to make a pidge and a full skein of ecru to make a scarf in Feather and Fan stitch.

I also did a shawl recently in Feather and Fan with that white baby yard that has a thread of floss incorporated for sparkle...it was a fairly light project to carry and bunched up nice and small to fit in a big purse thanks to the lace stitch.

(Note: I do NOT knit while riding in a moving car, nor do I recommend it to anyone else--if a deer or dog ran out in front of the car, or some idiot pulled out without looking, the needle could wind up impaling someone.)

I actually do knit in the car a lot, I'll be careful to drop knitting in the event of a sudden stop.

I like the idea of lightweight projects such as lace, and if they stood up to the Texas heat, they sound travel friendly.

If you use circular needles you'd be highly unlikely to impale anyone. I use circular needles for almost all my knitting these days. They're also ideal for travel knitting because they don't impinge on your neighbour's space. And they pack away quickly and easily in minimum space, with very little risk of dropping stitches.

I find that too, but I had someone on a plane flight this spring who was appalled that I was allowed to knit. I figured knitting needled (circular) weren't as sharp as the pencil she was using to to her Sudoku puzzle, but I didn't say anything.

I knit in the car a lot too and anywhere else for that matter - in the UK it's illegal not to wear a seatbelt so it's safe enough and you're not very likely to impale someone if you're wearing your seatbelt.

I took my Shetland shawl with me last week when I was on holiday and knitted in the railway waiting room and on the train and all week and in my brother's car on the way home! Shetland lace shawls do attract attention though because people wonder what on earth you're doing! I use circs all the time too.

Incidentally I did travel by plane last year and the security was such at Gatwick that nobody would have dreamed of taking out knitting. However on the way back from Guernsey nobody minded and I once again knitted (EZ's Pi Shawl) all the way back. Bliss!

I knit in cars, planes, trains and buses and generally other knitters approach me and we chat. My kids thought that Knit in Public day was just another day smile

Simple lace, like the feather and fan shawl I did, travels surprisingly well.

And unfortunately for me, I live in an area notorious for deer strikes AND have airbags--deer wait till the last minute and the strike would trigger the airbags...looking down at my knitting I would be unlikely to see it coming and would be impaled by even a short needle with airbag power behind it. (They're known to break arms after all).

Those are excellent reasons for not knitting in the car. I still like the idea of lace for traveling too. I have one ready for my trip to my parents, it is a lace scarf.
