I have written a new You Be the Judge article about Susan Atkins who was part of the Manson family and took part in the Tate - LaBianca murders.

Wow! I read your article, Vance, and am stunned as to what to think. My initial reaction and response is that she took part in destroying and ending lives of others, so why should she be freed to live out her life in peace? Regardless of her current situation and health problems, she should be made to keep her punishment.
On the other hand, I have such a strong emapthy for someone with a terminal illness and feel she needs some peace.
But, then again, maybe this is God's way of giving her punishment for what she did to others. Will she find peace on Judgement Day before God?
This is a toughie!

I feel the same way, Phyllis. Part of me thinks she should rot in jail but part of me thinks that she deserves a second chance. She has done a lot of good things in jail and the time she was with Manson, she was brainwashed by his charms and was also heavy into drugs at the time including LSD. Even the prosecuting attorney thinks that she should be released to enjoy the remaining days of her life. She has been in prison longer than any other woman in the history of the penal system in California and if they didn't take away the death penalty in that state, she may be already dead and this would be a moot point.
Now if she wasn't terminally ill would the prosecuting attorney, Vincent Bugliosi, be a proponet for her release? Who knows? It is tough to say if she should be released or not. Shedidn't kill anyone in my family so it is easy for me to be up in the air about it.
You are right. It is a toughie. To say the very least.

Thank you Phyllis. I am going start doing it differently now too. I amgoing to try and do a poll from now on and give the gist of the article and then open up a discussion with that.
