My mint is being ravaged by a little red bug that leaves what appears to be black scales on the leaves of the plant. What is it and how can I get rid of this little critter - naturally?

I would try spraying with plain old alcohol and then rinsing off the residue with water......make sure the plant is not in the sun until the leaves dry...
BTW: sounds like spider mites to me...look here:
