Motivated by watching "Ace of Cakes" (not all TV is bad, right?), I just wrote an article on starting a cake decorating business. Read about starting a Cake Decorating Business. So, are you the next Duff?

So, how about the Death Star cake?

When I can find them, I'll have to upload some of my pictures for you.
I always make my kids' birthday cakes by hand, and they are never "normal". I also always get tagged for all ballgame parties.
Of course I'm following in my Mom's (the caterer) footsteps. She makes and decorates all of her own wedding cakes.

Oooh, that would be great, Michelle! I so admire beautiful cakes. It's one of those things I can concieve but not achieve. Like most art! LOL
I made lots of birthday cakes, too, with molds & really bad basics like stars. Only for my own kids & when they were really little, though! :-) Now, I'm about down to writing happy birthday on a giant cookie.

I loved decorating cakes with frosting flowers! For the 25 years that I was raising my 5 kids, the cakes were my major means of artistic expression. Now I paint instead, and haven't baked a cake in YEARS!
There was an article in my local paper just a couple of days ago about a woman in town who has a wedding cake business. She had to have a separate kitchen built onto her house just for the baking business, as per dep't of health regulations. That would have stopped me, right there!

Claybird, that's why I recommend just renting kitchen space at first. That's a huge cash outlay for a start-up. Now, if she'd been doing it for years and had a clientele, then that could be money well-spent.

Having trouble locating all our pictures, but here's a fun one I did: This was from a "Tea Party" theme that we did. All the little girls dressed up in their Sunday dresses, and then we decorated straw hats for them to wear, and they ate outside under the gazebo, little sandwiches, tea and lemonade and then this bonnett cake. It was a cookie cake on the bottom with a domed pund cake on top that I covered with rolled fondant and decorated with foondant that I tinted and cut out to make the bow and other shapes.
