My husband has asked me to start the books for a company he and a friend are starting. They have invented a small widget and have seven receipts for materials. There are no bank accounts. When I studied accounting some years ago, the techniques given dealt with going concerns. The library has been of little help. The two software programs I've tried don't allow me to make the entries that I think should be made. Can anyone make any recommendations? Thank you so much.

Quicken's "Quick Books" or whatever the current equivalent is, has served me well. You can also do all of the simple tasks in plain old MS Excel.

Its all in how much you want/need to do to stay afloat with the task.

Quicken is what I use. It's probably the best.

I like MYOB. Or Accounting Edge. I am an office manager in my day job and I really like it.

there are plenty of programs out there. Main thing is that you use one you're willing to do (or willing to hire someone else to do)

It really depends. I have clients who use most accounting software that's out there. One used MYOB because her accountant recommended it. But then she tried to get an bookkeeper none were available in her area. So keep in mind that some day, someone else will do the work you're doing and you need to be able to find people.

Other consideration:
will you have inventory?
are employees in your future?
which programs do your accountants use?
