I think there is such a fine line between becoming defensive and being sure of your self and your decisions. In order to be confident with your decisions and your beliefs, you have to judge the decisions and beliefs of others. Then you need to assess where they fit in or do not fit in to your own belief system.
So, while we try not to judge others, it's almost a necessity. I think what the counting of the omer can teach us is that we can be more conscious about what we say and do - and we always have room for improvements!
