Have you ever had coffee and beignets? Apparently this is a classic combo in New Orleans. When we went down there last year, we "had" to have some in the French Quarter!

We had them at Cafe du Monde on the main square.

I'm not sure what a beignet is, Lisa, but your photo looks similar to a treat my grandmother used to make called kruschiki. Kruschiki is a Ukranian word. This pastry is a very light, flaky dough, that is cut in the center and turned like a bow, deep fried, then coated with confectioner's sugar. Although it is deep fried, it should not be greasy or heavy in any way. Just flaky, with powdered sugar that can't help but get all over! Unfortunately, I don't know how to make them, (they never used written recipes or measurements in those days) and I hesitate to try any of the online recipes because I have never tasted any that had the airyness that hers did.

Is this a similar food, with roots in Europe? European borders and peoples moved about with such frequency (borders moving, armies conquering, people leaving their homelands) that I am surprised there are not more foods that are similar throughout Europe.

Deep frying began with the Romans so I imagine that everywhere the Romans went ended up having dishes that were very similar smile

Yes, beignet in particular is French but pretty much every culture the Romans went to has their name for it smile

Interestingly Wikipedia says that New Orleans is the primary city associated with beignets in modern times smile

I'll have to seek them out. My mouth is watering. It seems like coffee and beignets would be a pleasant way to start the day.

I should point out that for many of us, this would be an easy way to gain a few extra pounds every month smile

For my exercise level, I would have to look at them as a nice special treat, but not something that I could eat daily and expect to even maintain the weight I have smile

and the coffee at Cafe du Monde is Chickery coffee as well.

I prefer PR or Cubano coffee with my beignet but hey... as long as it has sugar and a touch of soy its good ;0)
