A carbon offset is a way to "minimize your harmful impact" on the earth. So if you take a flight and burn a lot of gas by doing so, you then buy some rainforest acreage so that you help the environment.

Here's a site I found that ensures healthy offsets (so for example a company doesn't keep selling the same offset to multiple people)
